We offer a variety of preventative care services such as vaccinations, screenings, and wellness exams. We recommend all individuals receive their annual preventative exam as it allows us to do a dedicated visit to make sure all of your preventative needs are being addressed. These exams are generally free for the patient for most insurances.

Dr. Thomas Karisny is a board certified Family Medicine physician. He is originally from Louisiana where he lived until age 25. He received his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from LSU (Louisiana State University). He received his Medical Doctorate from LSU-New Orleans---School of Medicine in 1997 where he graduated as a member of

He received his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from LSU (Louisiana State University). He received his Medical Doctorate from LSU-New Orleans---School of Medicine in 1997 where he graduated as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha (Honor Medical Society) as well as received a National Health Service Corps scholarship. He then moved to Knoxville, Tennessee where he completed his family medicine residency at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. While there, he also completed a fellowship in Obstetrics. In 2001, Dr. Karisny moved to Blairsville to complete a three year commitment with the National Health Service Corps. He has remained here ever since. Dr. Karisny is married to Nicole and together, they have raised three children (Taylor, Austin, and Savannah). Dr. Karisny enjoys hiking, hunting, fishing, and running marathons. He has served as the Chief of Medical Staff for Union General Hospital (2019-2021). His practice has changed over the years as the community has grown. While initially delivering babies (2001-2007) and proving inpatient care (2001-2022), he now is focused only on outpatient care. He continues to provide care for his nursing home patients at Union County Nursing Home. His practice is now primarily adult medicine with an emphasis on geriatric medicine.

Dawn Sherrill Elliott is a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) from Connecticut. She moved to Blairsville in August 2018 to marry the love of her life, a native from Murphy, NC. She is a graduate from Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT and is a certified member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. She received the Florence Nightingale Award while at Sacred Heart University. She has been an RN since 2002 and FNP since 2008.
As a nurse practitioner she has worked in a school-based health center, orthopedic practice, and a family practice in CT. Most recently she has worked for Erlanger’s Urgent Care in Murphy and at an employee clinic at Moog. Prior to this she was a registered nurse in the ICU/CCU, PACU, and has also worked as a school nurse for several years.
She has a heart for the community in which she lives, and has done vision screenings for local daycares, Christmas caroling and hymn singing at nursing homes and assisted living, scrapbooking at assisted living, and teaching piano lessons and music at a Christian school. She plays the piano and guitar, is an author/singer/songwriter of several inspirational Christian books and music, and enjoys serving in the music ministry at her church. She loves taking walks, playing badminton, and spending time with her family, dog and cat. She has two young adult daughters, a toddler granddaughter, two stepchildren in elementary school, and cares for her elderly father who lives with her. She is so thankful to be living in these beautiful mountains and planting her roots here with her family.
